In the Adagio espressivo the violin sang in hushed voice, in sombre reply to a piano whose melody reached out towards the taut energies of the Scherzo and on to the perfectly judged variations of the Finale.

After the interval, Bell and Vera gave a sharp-etched and impassioned performance of Janácek's 1914 Violin Sonata, tense with the shuddering anticipation of the Russian Army's entry into Hungary...
